We are learning to be safe in and around water. We are practising to float. Some of us can do it by ourselves and some of us can do it with help from our friends. Check out these photos.

We are learning how to be firewise!  We need to know where a safe meeting place is at our house.  We are going to talk to our families about this tonight.
If the smoke alarm goes BEEP, BEEP, BEEP - we know that we need to get out FAST!  We will go to our safe meeting place.
We are going to check to see if we have smoke alarms at our house.  These tell us if we have a fire at our house.  It is like our nose...the smoke alarm can smell the smoke!

Music with Jen

We are learning to write, read and play rhythms.  Crotchets, quavers and rests make music.  We are learning how to draw them.  Jamie said - "I am not very good at writing a rest - it is a z and a c together. "

The Hissing Bush

We have been talking about what it means to predict.  We know that predicting means having a really good guess.  Our big book this week is called "The Hissing Bush."  Before we read the book, we talked about what we know.  We know that bushes don't hiss!  So we knew that there must be something in it or behind it.  We had to predict why it was hissing.

Some of our good guesses were...
* a cat
* a snake
* the wind
* a goose

Elly thought it might be an elephant!  That wasn't a good guess because an elephant couldn't fit in the bush and elephants don't hiss!

We had to draw what we thought it might be.  Have a look at our pictures to see what our prediction was...

Our School...

We think RSS is a great place to be! We want 4 year olds to be happy about coming to school. We don't want them to be frightened or scared. We are going to make a movie to show 4 year olds how cool school is.

We like school because...

 * We learn how to read.
 * We have a great playground.
 * We learn how to write.
 * We have singing with Nic in the hall.
 * there are nice teachers.
 * We have buddies who help us with our learning.
 * We get to do Calendar Maths.  It is like they are the teacher, but they are actually kids!
 * We have Sports with Sha.  She is really fun!
 * We learn to do puzzles.
 * We play with our friends.
 * We do word power.  This helps us to get better at rhyming words.
 * We have a cool library. We get to take the books home!
 * We learn how to do great maths!
 * We like doing poems.
 * We like doing alphabet books.  It helps us to get better at the names and sounds of the alphabet.
 * We can share other clases learning by looking on their blogs.
 * We practise our handwriting.
 * We learn music with Jen.  Jen is famous.  She is in a magazine!
 * We do rhyming words and Silly Sentences to help with our writing.

Grumpy Bear

Oh dear! Grumpy Bear doesn't look very happy Quentin. Who is that chasing him?

Team Work

After the Olympics and our Olympic Day at Arena Manawatu we are exploring what it means to be a good team.

Yesterday Jamie, Kate, Eva and Halle did 2 role plays to show different types of team work.  The first game we saw them play was terrible!  They were fighting and arguing the whole time!  (BUT they were just pretending!)

Here is what we saw, heard and thought they might be feeling...

The second role play was MUCH better! Jamie, Eva and Halle worked well together as a team. Here is what we saw, heard and thought they might be feeling...

SO - what have we learnt about team work?

What makes a good team...have a look here to find out...

We are writing to persuade...

We are learning how to write to persuade. To start with, we didn't know what persuading meant. Logan told us that it means convincing. We are trying to get other people to think the same as us. We know that first we have to tell people what we think. Then we have to tell people why we think that. 'Because' is a good word to use.

We have been trying to convince Elly that we should keep buddy time.

Listen to our stories...

I think we should have buddy time because it is fun and our buddies are nice and I like singing with our buddy class. I love going to see my buddies so I can learn songs. Eva

I like buddy time because it's fun. My buddy likes me because he had never seen me. I chose him because I likes his blue t-shirt. Edward

We should have buddy time because when I am a big kid I would know the song and I can teach my little buddy. And when my little buddy is big, my little buddies can teach their little buddies. Kate

I think we should have buddy time because it is fun. It is fun because my buddy keeps saying "sit down Hannah" and that makes me laugh. Hannah

I like buddy time because I want to learn songs. I also like colouring in with my buddy. Emma

I think we should have buddy time because I need to know all of the buddies names. My buddy is funny and he helps me learn the song and do the actions. Quentin

Changing our Thinking

In maths, we are learning to change our thinking! Today Elly gave us the answer instead of the question. We had to try and think of the question. Wow!! It was hard! The answer was 6. We thought of 3 questions... 3 + 3 = 5 + 1 = 2 + 4 = Can you think of anymore?

Our Shape Sonic Pics

On the iPads this week, we have a 'shape' challenge.  We need to take photos of 3 different shapes in our class.  We then put them into Sonic Pics and talk about what makes them the shape.  We are learning to DESCRIBE each shape.

Here are the Monday Sonic Pics...
hmmm....sorry....I'm having issues with the movies...still trying to sort! Watch this space...

Water Colour Painting

We have been working on a water colour art project.
We read "I Wish that I Had Duck Feet" by Dr Seuss.
It's a neat story about a boy who wants to be different and then decides he just wants to be himself.
The illustrations are done in water colour - but NOT by Dr Seuss.
We had lots of fun deciding what we would look like if WE could change parts of ourselves!
We started with a simple blackline crayon drawing then we used watercolour brushes and paint to fill in the spaces.
Finally - we wrote captions to go with our art.
We think you will agree that our art is wonderful!

Our First Ideas

We have learning buddies in the Monster Minds. Today we made a Y chart so we could think about what we would see, feel and hear when we are working with our learning buddies. Here are our first ideas. I wonder if you have anymore ideas for us?

'at' Word Family

Today we thought about the 'at' word family. Here are all of the words we thought of. Can you think of anymore?

The Listening List

The monster minds are learning to be good listeners.
Here are some of our ideas...
Kate- You have to face your buddy's face.
Halle- You have to listen to the person who is talking and if you have something to say you wait until they are finished.
Jamie- Don't talk to anyone else when you are listening to your buddy.
Chase- You are talking only to your buddy.
Kate- We keep our hands to ourselves. Putting them on your knees is a good idea.

It is really important to be a good listener. Can you think of any other ideas so that we can be good listeners?

More FM Junior Joker

More FM are coming to Russell Street on Tuesday!  They are looking for the best "Junior Jokers" in Palmerston North.

Do you have a funny joke that you could share in front of the whole school?  It would be great if you could practise it between now and Monday.  We will choose the funniest joke from our class on Monday and then the best joker will share their joke to the whole school on Tueday.

Wow!!  Fun!!

Maths with the Monster Minds

Edward - We had maths mission. We were drawing spots on the tens frames to make numbers.
Jayden - When I played on the ipods, I played Park Maths. I shared with Eva.
Logan - In Park Maths, we play games. We feed the hippo but only the food that he can eat.
Susie - When we play Park Maths we have to count how much food the animal can eat.
Chase - I glued the numbers on. The numbers had to match on the fingers and on the tens frames.
Jamie - We were learning about take away with Susie. Like if you have 10 and you take away 6 then you're left with 4.

Balancing with Susie and the Cat in the Hat

Today we read The Cat in the Hat, by Dr Seuss.
The naughty cat balances lots of things on his body and he balances on a ball.
WE decided to try balancing, too. Susie had lots of things for us to try to balance.
Would you like to see what we did? It's a Balancing Act! on PhotoPeach

Here are some of our ideas about all the balancing we did:

Anika- We tried balancing books on our heads so they wouldn't fall off
Halle- We balanced spoons on our hands, using one finger or two and Carolyn helped us
Quentin- With the blocks I made a big big tall tower, and then I pushed it down
Chase- I put one penguin on top of another
Eva- The tower kept falling down when it got heavier
Quentin- I didn't put the ball on the bottom because then it would fall down
Hannah- I stacked the blocks up.
Emma- Balancing the ball on the cone was hardest
Fyfe- The blocks were hard for me but I made another one and it didn't fall down
Aria and Kreashyn- The penguins were hard to balance because they kept falling down. We put the big one on the bottom.
Troy- The blocks fell down when I stacked then straight up but I made a strong castle.

We had to do it carefully and not be messy.

Great thinking, Monster Minds!

I am the Lorax

Congratulations, Monster Minds! You created some fabulous art work! I like the way you added such bold colour and worked very hard to fill all the white spaces. Your cabbage trees have so much detail, with pattern and colour to make them interesting. Great work. Carolyn
